History

Known as "The Fort that saved America", Fort Mifflin was originally built by the British in 1771. It is the site of the largest bombardment the North American continent has ever witnessed. In 1777, during the American Revolution, a valiant five-week battle took place when the British Navy attacked Fort Mifflin on Mud Island. Fort Mifflin was reconstructed in 1798 as one of the coastal defenses of the era. An active military post until the Korean War, this made the Fort one of the longest continually used military posts in the nation up until that time. The Fort has played many roles in the security of our Nation in its 235 years of existence; garrisoned in the War of 1812, a Confederate prison during the Civil War and a munitions depot in World Wars I & II.

Fort Mifflin has a long history of paranormal activity and has been investigated by numerous research groups over the years. Some of the many claims include hearing a woman screaming in Elizabeth's Room in the main barracks, reports of disembodied voices and the sightings of full apparitions.

Investigation

Our investigation was a thrill for the entire team. It's a beautiful location filled with incredible history. During our investigation our team heard many strange sounds, footsteps and disembodied voices. The hotspots during the evening appeared to be the Powder Magazine where we heard many odd sounds we could not explain, Casemate 11 where several team members heard what sounded like a man screaming, and Casemate 5 where we witnessed unexplained lights.

Investigation Photos

The NJPR Team arrives at Fort Mifflin. From left to right - Mark Johnson, Todd Sinclair (kneeling), Jennifer Purcell, John Keegan, Ed Martinez, Brooke Haramija, Karrie-Ann Versace, Chris DeVinney and Loren DePinto. The team in Casemate 1 just before witnessing an unexplained flash of light behind them in the right corner.
Large anomaly above the door in Casemate 5. The next three photos were taken within seconds of each other in front of the barracks and appears to show a faint apparition approaching.
Second photo showing an apparition getting closer. Third photo showing the apparition even closer. Some features can be seen including a head, shoulders and legs.

Note: Most researchers do not consider orb photos evidence of paranormal activity as airborne particles such as dust, pollen and moisture can cause "false positives".  While we agree that most "orbs" can be explained naturally, we have found in our research that a small percentage of "orbs" do seem to correlate to paranormal activity.  Therefore, we will post orb photos that we feel may represent paranormal activity, although we can not prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is the case.

Audio Evidence

"I Think I Died Here"

"Oh Yeah"

Recorded in Elizabeth's room in the second floor of the barracks, what sounds like a woman's voice saying, "I think I died here." This voice was also captured by a second recorder.   Also recorded in Elizabeth's room. Investigator Chris DeVinney accidentally dropped his flashlight which hurt his ears while wearing headphones. As he talks about it, a disembodied voice appears at the :22 second mark saying "Oh yeah". This was not any of our team. Click HERE to listen to an enhanced version.

Long Whispered Sentence

Two Beeps

In Elizabeth's room Jennifer comments that she made a noise, which is immediately followed by a male voice whispering something that sounds like a complete sentence. Click HERE to listen to an enhanced version.   Mark and John hear what sounds like two beeps in the Powder Magazine. We confirmed that this was not any of our equipment, nor was there anything in the building that would produce that noise.

"How Old Are You?"

Something Taps Recorder

In Elizabeth's room Jennifer asks "How old are you?" This is followed by a disembodied female voice that appears to be responding which was not heard by our team. Todd them makes a joke. Click HERE to hear the voice isolated and enhanced.   Something unseen loudly taps on Mark's digital recorder while he attempts to take a power nap in the barracks. A video camera was filming at the time and shows that nothing was near the recorder when this event occured (see video clip below).

"Becky"

Female Voice

A whispered voice is recorded in Casemate 11 seems to say the name "Becky". The sound at the end of the clip is Chris clearing his throat.   A female voice is recorded in the Powder Magazine just as Mark begins to talk.

Noise

Two Moans

The team hears an odd noise while out in the second Powder magazine outside of the Fort's walls.   Two moans are recorded in Casemate 5 that were not caused by any of our team. The moans occur at :07 and :24 seconds.

Groan

Something Taps Recorder

Mark hears a groan in Casemate 5.   Something unseen loudly taps on Mark's digital recorder while he attempts to take a power nap in the barracks. A video camera was filming at the time and shows that nothing was near the recorder when this event occured (see video clip below).

Long Groan

Exhale

Another groan is recorded while the team is having a conversation in Casemate 5.   An exhale is recorded in Casemate 11. This was not any of our team members.

Male Voice

Another Recorder Tap

Mark hears a male voice speak just before Loren talks in Casemate 1.   Something taps John's digital recorder while in Elizabeth's room in the barracks.

Powder Room Whistle

Powder Room Shuffling

John, Ed and Karrie hear whistling in the outer powder room.   The team hears shuffling in the powder room.

Footsteps

Stomp

The team hears a footstep in the powder room.   Karrie, Ed and John hear a loud step outside the door to the powder room.

Canon Shot

Dragging Noises

What sounds like a canon shot is captured on a digital recorder.   Chris and Jennifer were in Casemate 4 when they heard a dragging noise out in the hall.

Video Evidence

(Click thumbnails to view video clips)

John, Mark and Loren hear a deep humming sound while in the Powder Magazine.

An example of an insect caught on video. This shows the difference between insects and genuine anomalies.

As Loren asks for the spirits to make a sound, the video camera picks up a clicking sound while an orb moves down from the ceiling.

An anomaly flies across the powder magazine and appears to vanish into Loren's head.

A mist forms on the ceiling and darts down the magazine.   As an orb flies over John's head, the team hears an unexplained squeaking sound.

The team hears two more unexplained squeaks in the powder magazine.

Mark captures an unusual anomaly. At first glance it looks like an insect, but then it appears to vanish into the floor.

As Mark and John enter Casemate 5 they notice one of the cameras has shut off. Just as Mark begins to speak a female voice is heard talking. This was not anyone else present.   Mark and John hear an unexplained bootstep outside the door to Casemate 5.

A pinpoint of light appears on the back wall above where John is sitting. The team saw many of these lights throughout the investigation, but this is the one time we were lucky enough to also catch it on video.   As Mark attempts to take a quick power nap in the barracks, something taps loudly on his recorder on the bunk next to him. The video shows that Mark does not move and nothing comes near the recorder.

While sitting in Casemate 11 the team kept hearing a strange buzzing sound. This was not caused by insects.   A flashlight turns on by itself in Casemate 5.
