History: Rolling
Hills Asylum opened its doors in 1827 in response to a
New York state
legislation requiring all counties to assume duties of taking care of
individuals unable to care for themselves. Originally, a tavern
servicing stage coaches stood there from 1790 until December 1826 when it
was sold to Genesse county. The tavern serviced travelers along what is
now known as
US Route 20.
At that point, the facility took in paupers, unwed mothers, the insane,
and orphans. By the early 1950s, the facility served only as a
nursing home where it was then closed by 1972, stepping aside for a new
facility in Batavia, NY.
Rolling Hills Asylum is well known in the paranormal
community as being one of the most haunted locations in the U.S.. It
has been featured in both books and on television.
Investigation Summation: NJPR
conducted our investigation of Rolling Hills and we were granted sole
access to the entire facility. During the investigation Researchers
experienced disembodied voices and unusual taps and bangs that we were not
able to fully explain. The end of the second floor hallway in the
East Wing appeared to be the most active location where a long series of
bangs and raps were experienced by our investigators. At first we
thought the noises were caused by the building settling, and possibly by
it cooling off in the evening air after being in the sun all day.
But the amount and severity of the bangs appeared to go far beyond a
building settling. Despite this, the investigation itself appeared
to be relatively uneventful. It wasn't until we began reviewing our
audio and video data that we discovered just how much activity was going
on around us at the time.

There was a lot of dust
contamination throughout the building |
While there was a lot of dust, this
orb appears unusually bright and far away. |
Jane and guest investigator Keith
downstairs in the West Wing. |
Chris tries out our new "HelmetCam",
which was a big success during the investigation. |
Note: Most researchers do not consider
orb photos evidence of paranormal activity as airborne particles such as
dust, pollen and moisture can cause "false positives". While we agree
that most "orbs" can be explained naturally, we have found in our research
that a small percentage seem to correlate to paranormal activity.
Therefore, we will post orb photos that we feel may represent paranormal
activity, although we can not prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is
the case.

Voice |
"Did you die here?" |
Late in the evening a
couple of our investigators are singing out of tiredness.
At the end of the clip an unidentified voice says
something we can not make out. We have confirmed
that this was not any of our investigators. |
While investigating the
morgue, Jane asks any spirits if they died here.
This is followed by a woman's voice saying, "Yeah I did." |
Loud Moan |
Whisper |
Mark begins to comment
that so far he is not impressed with Rolling Hills.
However, another voice loudly moans over his sentence.
This was not heard at the time it was recorded. |
Guest Investigator
Keith comments about something in the hallway. This
is immediately followed by another voice whispering that
was not any of our team members. |
Blown In Ear |
3 Whistles |
Karrie hears something
blow in her ear in the first floor window room in the East
Wing. |
3 whistles are recorded
while the team walks the corridors. None of our team
whistled during this investigation. |
Child's Voice |
Laughter |
As Investigator Chris
is speaking a child's voice is heard laughing down the
corridor. |
A person laughing comes
over our walkie-talkies. None of our team members
were responsible. While it is possible that we
picked up a stray signal from outside the area, the
location is so remote that it leaves us uncertain as to
the cause. |
Faint Whistle |
Woman Screaming |
A faint whistle is
heard by the team. |
A woman's voice is
heard screaming down one of the corridors. |
"Alexander" |
Exhale |
One of our
investigators can be heard talking about posting a
picture. A moment later the name "Alexander" is
whispered faintly. None of our investigators said
this name, and there was no one named Alexander present
during the investigation. |
A strange breath exhale
is recorded while Chris explains hearing another
investigator down the hall. |
"Leave me alone!" |
"White light" |
After Chris comments
about the old building, another man's voice calls out,
"Leave me alone." |
A child's voice is
recorded saying, "White light". |
Door & Child's Laughter |
Bangs |
We recorded what sounds
like a door opening and closing, then a child's laughter
is heard. |
A sample of the many
bangs and raps we experienced on the second floor of the
East Wing throughout the investigation. |
Mumbling |
"Help" |
Investigator Mike says
"Flash" before taking a picture. This is followed by
a strange disembodied voice mumbling unintelligibly. |
A man's voice is
recorded asking for help. |
Whistling |
Voice |
Whistling is heard as
one team starts an EVP session. |
An unexplained voice is
captured immediately at the start of this recording.
A few moments later, Mike comments that he thought he
heard a whisper. |

Unexplained laughter |
Rolling Cart |
Unexplained laughter
captured in the East Wing. |
What sounds like a cart
rolling very loudly past the digital audio recorder is
recorded in the second floor hallway of the East Wing.
This section of the building was empty when this was
recorded. |
"Roy" |
Sigh & Voice |
A classic example of a
spirit answering a question before it is asked. In
this clip you can hear a voice say the name "Roy", and
then Greg asks what the name is of the big shadow person
who is reported to haunt the building, whose name happens
to be Roy. |
Also recorded in an
empty corridor, what sounds like a sigh followed by a
unintelligible voice. |
"Uh huh" |
"Please stay in your room!" |
As Ed comments about
not sitting in one spot too long, another voice chimes in
saying, "uhh huh". |
Ed asks if this is the
room, then another loud voice says "Please stay in your
room!" We confirmed that none of the investigators
present said this. |
"What's that?" |
Load Moan |
A loud bang is heard,
then a strange voice says, "What's that?" This was
not any of our investigators. |
A loud moan is heard by
Greg in the East Wing Corridor. |
Disembodied Voice |
"So?" |
Another disembodied
voice is heard by the team. |
Greg comments about
rodents being able to get into the building, and a
disembodied voice says "So?" |

Video
Evidence
While driving to
Rolling Hills to start the investigation, we were
recording video in the car. A woman's voice calls
out Investigator Greg's name very loudly. There were
no females in the car, and the radio was not on. |
While conducting our
preliminary tour of the Asylum, a strange noise is heard
by Investigator Greg. |
A large anomaly is
captured in an empty room in the West Wing. It's
possible that this may be simply a large particle of lint
floating towards the camera. However, it was the
only time we caught anything like this throughout the
entire investigation. We'll let you decide. |
A loud hiss is recorded
while one team is in the West Wing. |
A large anomaly appears
to manifest. Again, this may be a particle of dust
floating into the light of the camera. |
An object appears to
flutter out of the wall, then do a quick turnaround to
vanish back into the wall. While there were many
insects in the building, this object does not appear
solid. We do not claim this is paranormal, just odd. |
What appears to be a
partial apparition is captured immediately to the right of
Investigator Mark while wearing the HelmetCam.
Multiple cameras were focused on this area which proved
that no one was standing to the right of the camera, nor
were any objects along the wall. Mark did not raise
his hand either. The object is not there for the
first three times Mark points the camera down the
corridor, yet on the fourth time it appears. We
still have no idea what this anomaly could be. |
A string-like anomaly
appears in a doorway and vanishes into the wall. |
A voice is heard by
Investigator Chris while walking down the East Wing
corridor. |
A bright orb that
appear to glow with its own light shoots to the left of
Jane. |
